Douglas Mountain Trail and Bike Skills Park

The Douglas Mountain Trail and Bike Skills Park has been on my “must-hike list” since last year!

And finally, today I took LittleMissH, and we went exploring.

To get to the trail, simply put “Douglas Municipal Water Park or 701 E. Center St.
Douglas, WY 82633″ into your GPS. The dirt parking lot is actually a few blocks past the pool, but for those that are unfamiliar with the area I find this to be a good way to get to the right spot.

You’ll find a porta-potty and a few places to sit at the trailhead, as well as a map that clearly shows the route.

This trail is incredibly family-friendly and a loop-type trail. This means you go in a circle and end up back where you started. The La Prele Loop is just about 1.5 miles long, and we hiked both directions today for an almost 3-mile hike.

The trail is well marked, though it can be a bit confusing with some of the Mountain Bike trails and side trails that could lead you astray. Thankfully, it’s fairly easy to see the entire path, and you should be able to figure out what direction you need to take. Worst-case scenario, you zig-zag around on the trails a bit and get some extra steps in while you work your way back to your car.

This trail is fairly exposed to the elements and, as a result, offers a spectacular view of Laramie Peak and the surrounding mountain range.

There isn’t much elevation, which makes it perfect for families to hike, and an area with trees looks like a great spot to stop with your young kids for a break and a snack.

Trail runners will find this the perfect trail for working on speed, but plan to do the loop a few times if you want to get in any kind of distance training.

If you’re looking for a well-maintained trail that is suitable for a wide range of skill levels, the Douglas Mountain Trail and Bike Skills Park is the perfect choice.

If you’re looking for a trail that will give you all those Wyoming mountain feelings of quiet and solitude, this isn’t it. The trail’s easy-to-access location means it’s in town. You’ll see homes and the town of Douglas from almost every spot on the trail.

As someone who doesn’t know anything about Mountain Biking, I can’t tell you anything about how the trail can be used for that activity. But to my untrained eye, it looked pretty amazing!

NOTE: For those of you who will ask, “Does it have snakes?” my answer is, “It’s a trail in Wyoming, there is always a chance that there will be snakes.”
