It’s time to announce our book for the Prairie Wife Virtual Book Club: May 2026

NOTE: THIS WILL BE OUR LAST BOOK CLUB UNIL SEPTEMBER, WE TAKE A BREAK FOR SUMMER

This monthly Virtual Book Club is all thanks to Wind City Books, an Indie Bookstore in Downtown Casper, Wyoming.

Miranda from Wind City Books can ship our book club book WHEREVER YOU LIVE, so please use the link provided below to purchase your Prairie Wife Book Club books. I strongly encourage buying your book from Wind City Books. You’ll be supporting a local Indie Bookstore, and they can quickly ship the book directly to your home. If you order now, you’ll receive it in plenty of time to finish it before book club. You can also listen to the book through Libro.fm  It works just like Audible, but you have the option to support your local Indie Bookstore with your purchases.

So, how does The Prairie Wife Virtual Book Club Work?

It’s easy (I promise) and available to ANYONE who wants to join.

You don’t need social media because we’re doing it all with Zoom!

At our hour-long Virtual Book Club meeting, we will discuss this month’s book in depth, using the questions below the review as a guide.

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

Miranda (the owner of Wind City Books) has said that she cannot keep this book on the shelves! Everyone that I know who has read it has loved it…and while we don’t usually go with “trendy” books for our book club, we’re making an exception for this one!

Here’s what the publisher had to say:

One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn’t explain much about where he came from or why he’s there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person’s story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.

A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

I had a love / hate relationship with this story. Having lost a child and also having a brother who was in Vietnam I found a couple of chapters difficult to read. Sometimes it’s best to leave things unsaid.Theo himself was a little to perfect at times and other times I found him lovable and sweet. I wonder whether his secret was worth his life? I’m sure his son will always have questions unanswered. The Greek God Theos was well represented in this story. I loved the title of this book more and more as I read the story

  2. Nicole Schoening says:

I absolutely loved this book. I can’t recommend it enough. I think it is tender and heartfelt. For the longest time, I kept thinking that Theo was an angel and that he would wonder off and never been seen again. When I got to the end, and learned Theo’s identity, I fell more in love with the entire book. My husband is an artist and artists have such a unique way of seeing the world. There were so many moments throughout the book that I thought about my own behavior, how I show up for others and try to make my students feel seen, heard and valued (I work as a Social Worker). The world needs more people like Theo. People who see beyond the facade and can sit authentically with others. What an amazing first novel for Allen Levi.
