Your Honor,
My name is Preston Sorensen, and I am a junior in high school. I never imagined I would be standing here, having to explain how much an adult’s actions have affected my life. But the harassment I’ve experienced has completely changed the way I’ve had to go about my days. At times it has made me anxious, afraid, and just on edge.
An adult is supposed to be someone you can trust, someone who knows better. But instead, I’ve been made to feel powerless, like my safety and well-being don’t matter. The stress from this situation has impacted my schoolwork, my friendships, my ability to compete at sporting activities, and my ability to just live a normal life. I’ve had to be worried about what might happen next.
I’ve avoided places I used to enjoy because I don’t want to run into the person who has caused me so much fear. Even at home, I don’t feel fully at ease because the stress doesn’t just go away.
No one should have to go through this—especially not because of an adult who should know right from wrong. This situation has left me feeling small, like my voice doesn’t matter. But I am standing here today because I refuse to let this define me. I want to feel safe again. I want to be able to focus on my future without the weight of this stress holding me back.
I hope that by speaking out, not only will justice be served, but that no one else will have to endure what I have.
Thank you.
