The following is a copy of the Victim Impact Statement of Brandi Sorensen from March 19, 2025 in the Plea Hearing of M***** S**** Misdemeanor Stalking Charges
I stand before you today as a mother seeking justice and as an advocate for my son, Preston, who has endured unimaginable distress at the hands of M***** S****.
M*****’s harassment began under the guise of friendship when my son was dating her daughter, As their relationship ended, she pressured him to reconcile and became overly-involved. Over the next year, she still pretended to care about him and our family.
Meanwhile, we kept receiving anonymous messages and even a letter targeting Preston. Some were sent directly to him, stalking and harassing him about his actions in real-time. Others were directed at us, his parents, attempting to get him in trouble by claiming to have witnessed certain behaviors. For example, one message alleged he had gotten in trouble with a teacher for grabbing Gillian’s butt, but when I spoke with the teacher, they confirmed that nothing like that had ever happened.
There were multiple sexually inappropriate things, such as M***** suggesting my son send her daughter pictures of him in his underwear and jokes that she left her daughter lingerie as an apology for him. The “anonymous texter” posed as someone from another town, asking Preston about Marcie and her daughter, including whether he found them attractive and if M***** was a MILF. She asked my son if he had a boner while dancing with Gillian.
M***** kept bugging him to “just marry her daughter” for nearly a year after they had broken up. In my opinion, it was never about her daughter—it was about Marcie’s obsession with my son.
And when my son and his girlfriend —two teenagers—chose to block a 40-year-old woman on social media because her continued harassment made them feel unsafe, she lost her mind. She retaliated in ways that no rational adult would and she made it seem as though Preston and Gillian were the ones causing drama. Because of her lies and double life as the “anonymous texter” people in our community have admitted they treated him and my family poorly, assuming my son was at fault.
When we learned from the GPD that it was M***** S****, a 40-year-old woman who was stalking my son, I realized there was a bigger picture I had missed. M***** didn’t just stalk and harass my son anonymously—she also manipulated him openly, as herself. While grooming him, she worked to isolate him from his family, friends, and girlfriend, all for a purpose that remains unknown.
No one can truly understand the helplessness of watching your child be tormented by someone lurking in the shadows, while you have to remain silent because you know that speaking up could jeopardize the investigation. M***** stole moments from my son that should have been some of his best memories and turned them all into nightmares. FFA conventions, school dances, wrestling tournaments…he was unable to look forward to or enjoy any of these events. She made him feel unsafe, knowing that someone was always watching, always plotting, and always looking for new ways to cause harm.
I am incredibly proud of my son for the resilience, courage, and integrity he has shown throughout this nightmare. Despite M*****’s relentless attempts to break him down and sabotage his relationships, he has remained steadfast, refusing to let her actions define him or steal his joy. His ability to rise above the chaos speaks to a strength far beyond his years.
I ask that the court fully consider the extent of the harm M***** S**** has caused—not just to my son and my family, but to every victim impacted by her actions.
Even after this very court granted a protection order, M***** S**** continued to push the boundaries of what she was allowed to do. During that hearing, you specifically told her that if she entered a grocery store and saw any of my family inside, she was to leave immediately and return at another time. Yet, when that exact situation occurred, she blatantly ignored your instructions. This deliberate disregard for your instructions makes it clear that she is still testing limits and looking for ways to push against the consequences of her actions.
Just recently, she tried to get around the decision that she was not to go to school activities that her kids are not involved in to watch state wrestling, I received a copy of the motion from her attorney and an unsigned document that made it look like it had been approved by the court. Had the court not called and gotten me copies of the decision, I would have believed that it had been approved. It was the weekend and there was no way we could have checked. I find this very manipulative and conniving! Once again she couldn’t just let our kids enjoy and focus on a big event. In my opinion, it wasn’t about her niece that doesn’t even go to the same school, she could have watched and cheered for her at many other tournaments but she only cared about state wrestling.
I believe she remains a danger to my family and to this community, and I worry that, without stricter enforcement, she will continue to push every boundary she has been given.
While I understand that a plea deal has been reached, I urge the court to impose the strictest possible conditions to ensure she is held accountable and prevented from ever doing this again. My family, my son, and others she has harmed deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing she will no longer have the opportunity to inflict this kind of damage on anyone else.
M*****, I hope that while you serve your sentence, you use the time to reflect on the harm you’ve done, not just to my son but to countless others, including your own friends and family. And I hope you figure out why causing drama and hurting people—especially children—brings you satisfaction. I hope you will finally be honest with yourself and your community and admit to everything you’ve done.

Unfortunately, it’s not just the stalking laws that are lax. Any and all domestic/family related punishments are close to zilch…. Domestic violence, DUIs even, even domestic/family related kidnapping and related crimes. A slap on the wrist isn’t going to help change behavior… it only serves to escalate those behaviors when they lean they can get away with them without consequences. It’s an unfortunate situation all around.
Agreed we have a lot of work to do as a state.
