What I’m Watching Right Now

Fall is on its way with all new seasons of our favorite shows and a chance to find some new shows to love!

mom watching TVThis Spring I canceled our satellite and made the commitment to go full blown internet TV only. There ARE a few shows that I can’t handle waiting for the whole season to be free so, I pay for the season (which still results in waaaay less money each month than our $140 Satellite bill). Overall, I’ve been seriously impressed with the high quality TV I can find with the click of a button!

Over the last few months I have entered the world of binge watching….and man is it good.

Of course, for this busy mom of five, binge watching means sneaking in two episodes in a row during naptime (while I work) and after the Cowkids are asleep…but that counts right?

Here are a few shows that I’ve been loving. Make sure you let me know what you’ve been watching, I’m always open to new shows!

Nobodiesnobodies

This show is so amazing that I was more than fine with buying the first season on Amazon. Admittedly, it first caught my eye because of Melissa McCarthy, who is a producer and guest star on the show. But, I quickly realized that this show has so much more to offer. Nobodies is a witty and fast paced comedy about three writers trying to get a script turned into a movie. Using all of their Hollywood connections they try to get it moved to the next level, only to keep messing it up with their neurosis, white lies and schemes. One of my fav scenes is when Melissa (she plays an exaggerated version of herself) Facetimes the writers from her plane….I giggle every time (yes, this show is good enough to rewatch) AND I actually gasped when I saw how they ended the last episode of Season 1. Side Notes: It gave me a bit of a thrill to recognize the Groundlings from our girls tip to LA and, I have to admit that I’ve been stalking Rachel Ramras on Twitter…maybe she’ll take notice and do an interview with us?!

Jane the Virgin jane the virgin

I began watching this show when I was recovering from my surgery and was SO happy when the third season finally showed up on Netflix. The writers are phenomenal and the narrator is one of my favorite characters. I admit that the last season made me cry more than a few times but, sometimes a good cry is just what this girl needs. The plot twists, humor and the fact that the characters are all incredibly complicated (and you’ll constantly be forced to change who you love and who you hate) will have you seriously considering hiring a sitter so you can watch it uninterrupted. Ma and Pa are even hooked after I forced them to watch it…

The Great British Baking Show

great british baking

I like to have the TV on in the background when I’m cooking dinner. The news isn’t OK for the Cowkids to watch and neither are most of the other shows that I enjoy. I stumbled across this show on Netflix and soon fell in love with Mary Berry…with a name like that how can you not adore her? A collection of amateur British bakers gather together to compete in three baking challenges. Paul Hollywood and Marry Berry judge and critique the bakes and send one person home. You can’t help but pick favorites early on. I have to admit the Cowkids and I were holding back tears of joy as we watched the season 3 finale. Warning: This show will force you to up your baked goods game…

Grace and Frankiegrace and frankie

I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience for this show but, holy cow did I get hooked. Grace and Frankie are polar opposites brought together by the fact that their husbands leave them at the same time…for each other. This awesome comedy is about ageism, families, and the fact that it’s never to late to find yourself. There’s a reason why it was nominated for several Emmy’s, take some time to check it out.

The Newsroomthe newsroom

This show is older (2012) and somehow, with the last decade of having babies, The Cowboy and I missed it. I’ve been trying to find some shows that we can watch together, and this is one of our favorites. The acting is amazing and the fast pace means you have to really pay attention! Seeing them cover major news stories that we lived through (like killing Osama Bin Laden) has been pretty cool and resulted in some wonderful conversations.

Honorable Mentions:

Poldark

The Mindy Project

The Crown

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Confession: I am not the target audience for either, but I do really get a kick out of both “Jane the Virgin” and “The Great British Baking Show”.

The writing on Jane the Virgin can’t be beat…

I’m a cable TV customer but cut down my bill as much as possible so no HBO, etc., for me. I’ve yet to venture into the Amazon, Netflix arena but will try once I’m settled into my new place as I bought a Roku. The only shows I’ve watched that you mentioned are the Great British Baking Show an The Newsroom. Now to list what I do watch – probably too many:

Housewives of NYC – can’t wait for that reunion show.
Just finished watching Claws and Daytime Divas.
Food Network – Guy’s Grocery Games, Next Food Channel Star, a new cake show too.
    HGTV – Tiny Homes
The Mist, Queen of the South, TNT’s Animal Kingdom,
Animal Planet – Pittbulls and Paroles, Rescue Dog to Hero Dog (new, cute show)
    Missing Women of Chillicothe, OH
    Discovery – Unabomber drama

Did I say I watch too many? That’s just off the top of my head.

    1. Prairie Wife says:

OMG I totally agree on NYC and of course Tiny Homes…I love the house hunters international! And I need to get on that Next Food Channel star that sounds good!

  3. Krystal says:

The show my husband and I watch together is House of Cards. I am currently binge watching Grey’s Anatomy and then will finish Jane the Virgin. Cable Girls was really good too!

    1. Prairie Wife says:

I’ll have to check out Cable Girls!
