Forks, Knives, and Spoons by Leah DeCesare #Giveaway

christmas hangoverI don’t know about you, but I’m finally getting back on track after the Christmas chaos and joy!

The Cowkids, The Cowboy and I had a wonderful weekend full of memories and laughter…and my older brother surprised me with a visit! It was an unexpected blessing to spend the holiday with him.

I stayed away from social media and instead spent my free time snowshoeing with friends, consuming massive amounts of sugar (I’ll worry about that in the New Year), reading, sneaking in a few last minute Christmas movies, and basically being a lazy bum!

If you’re looking for a good read to kick of your 2018 I have an awesome recommendation for you.

forks knives spoonsForks, Knives and Spoons is a novel written by Leah DeCesare.

As I sat to write this review, I found myself smiling as I thought about the characters in this book, and I noticed I was actually missing them a bit. It’s always a sign of a good author when you feel nostalgic upon finishing a book!

The novel begins in the late 80’s with Amy. She is stepping out on her own as a college student in Syracuse, New York and her father leaves her with some advice about the opposite sex. He explains that every man can be categorized as a fork, knife, or spoon. The plot steadily picks up pace as we meet Amy’s roommate Veronica and follow them through their four years at college. A steady stream of boys come into the plot…some turn out to be arrogant forks, some are nerdy yet lovable spoons, and a rare few are dateable knives. I admit that reading this part of the novel made me a bit nostalgic, as I could totally relate to the fashion and music trends that DeCesare references.

As the book continues and the years move on, Amy and her friends add more utensils to their list. For example plastic forks…men who are arrogant and fake, always trying to impress to cover their fragile egos. Who of us hasn’t meet a few of those over the years?

As I read this book I really became emotionally involved with the characters. I don’t want to give too much away, but I found myself telling one character over and over “You’re better than this!” While reading as fast as I could to find out if another woman would finally tell her boyfriend the truth about her life! When a character from the past returned I gasped out loud, and mentally congratulated DeCesare on her creative plot twists.

This book is a wonderful read with a quick moving plot and characters you can’t help but relate too. The ongoing theme of labeling men and trying to find the right one, is something that we all can admit to, and it’s done in a creative and thoroughly enjoyable way.

Forks, Knives and Spoons is definitely deserving of all the  awards that it has received!

Favorite college memory? Maybe when after writing a bunch of humorous essays my professor said I might be the next Erma Bombeck. I used to really enjoy her columns so I was flattered by his comment. Of course some other fun memories were going out to a bar and to see bands (hair metal of course) after night classes. 😉

My favorite memory occurred during a retreat just before college began freshmen year. One of the guys there was kinda cute, shy but REALLY made me laugh. He turned out to be a titanium knife and still makes me laugh almost fifty years later.

    1. Aw – a titanium knife – I love that! Congratulations on 50 years together – how wonderful!

  5. College… yikes! Not a great memory, but one I remember. My Sociology professor “Mr Picker” was a bit eccentric. He would come into class wearing the same clothes day after day and you knew what he had eaten as he would leave a map on his clothes ie. egg yolk, jams, tomato soup etc. Some days he would begin teaching as he walked through the door unaware if class had started, was in the middle or about to end! He was in his late 40’s to mid 50’s, lived with his mother (she lived with him?) and he never really looked any one in the eye when speaking to them. Socially awkward. I remember the final week of class and he must have been distracted earlier because he had only shaved off 1/2 his mustache with remnants of drier shaving cream on his face. He was actually brilliant, but completely unaware. He made an impression and that was 35 years ago.

    1. Sounds like a spoon to me … 🙂 Cheers to Mr. Picker!

My favorite memory from college is taking a spelunking class and actually getting to explore several caves – I have lived here my entire life and did not know that these even existed!

      That sounds awesome!
