The Best YesLysa TerKeurst, southern wife, mother of 5 and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, walks women through a sound and wise biblical approach to making decisions about what to take on in our lives in The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands. Her approach is practical, relatable, and fun to read. She encourages living with intention by listening to what God is calling us to take on, giving it 100 percent of ourselves to the responsibilities we call our Best Yes, and carefully considering how saying yes to what is asked of us will impact our resources (financial, emotional, physical, spiritual) and relationships.

TerKeurst asks “Who do I want to be? I want to be like the most non-frantic woman my family ever met, a woman who knows the gentle art of a life brush-stroked with her Best Yes, a woman who knows how to be lovingly present.” These words made my heart light up. The whole book is food for your soul as it is rich in bringing biblical principles to modern life. Terkeurst encourages us to pause in that moment of wanting to please everyone and ask ourselves to consider first our time, ability, money, passion, and our season.

Even though at this point in my life I am careful to not overextend myself, The Best Yes confirmed that I need to guard my time for my family with extreme diligence. Considering finances are obvious, but it did not occur to me before that giving away my emotional resources took away from my time with God and my family.

If you are a woman trying to please everyone and tend to take on too much, or even if you just need a little extra help in saying no in the gentlest of ways, Lysa Terkeurst’s The Best Yes should be next on your list of reads. What could you say no to to give more to what really matters in your life?
